Pilz macht Ameisen zu willenlosen Zombies

Eine Pilzart im brasilianischen Dschungel lockt Ameisen ins Verderben, indem sie das Verhalten ihrer Beute steuert: Sporen der Pilze wachsen in den Kopf der Insekten – die daraufhin ihrem Tod entgegenkrabbeln.

San Francisco – Manche Pilze können Ameisen völlig unter ihre Kontrolle bringen. Im brasilianischen Regenwald haben Forscher nun vier bislang unbekannte Arten dieser “Zombiepilze” entdeckt. Sie manipulieren das Verhalten von Rossameisen und töten die Insekten dort, wo die Pilze ideale Bedingungen für ihre Sporen vorfinden. Die Pilze, die im brasilianischen Bundesstaat Minas Gerais gefunden wurden, beschreibt ein Team um David Hughes von der Pennsylvania State University in Philadelphia im Fachjournal “PLoS ONE”.
