Sri Lankas Hunde sagen DANKE!!!

Your Excellences,

we understand that one of the reasons to set up dog shelters is to please the tourists that visit your beautiful and serene country by incarcerating poor dogs in such “shelters” where they will be inevitably subjected to such deprived lives and cruelty.

Yes, none of us like dogs straying and not looked after. But the solution is not to imprison any dogs in “shelters,” but to ensure that the dog population growth is arrested successfully via sterilization eliminating the need for shelters.

It is laudable that Sri Lanka is ahead of many countries of the world in that it has a no-kill policy and a national dog sterilization program offering free spaying of dogs to dog owners. It is a pity, however, that the most and perhaps the only crucial aspect of such a program, sufficient veterinarians, had not been fulfilled by recruiting them to offer this service island wide.

Doing an ill run national sterilization program is an absolute waste of money as dogs re-populate soon and it is indeed the very same program that would lead to an increase in the dog population. Dogs do not have to pay the price of such ill-run programs by having to be impriosned in “shelters.”

The only humane solution to the problem of stray dogs is sterilizing dogs and this is what has been recommended worldwide as against sheltering animals. We need to eradicate the need to shelter dogs, NOT create it.

And you have indeed done the right thing by setting up a national dog spay program, but it is unfortunate that it has not been done in an efficient manner. You cannot simply justify setting up shelters without running the spay program successfully. We urge you to run your spay program efficiently across the country before you set up country wide shelters.

We can assure you that no tourist to your country would like to see dogs suffering in “shelters.

With kind regards,

Quelle
